Swimming

Coach: Melissa Goodrich,
216/849-6741

6th, 7th and 8th graders are all eligible for the team.

You must have at least a 77 pecent overall average. Our team GPA was 92% last year.

Sign-ups for tryouts begin Oct. 1. You must sign-up by Friday, Oct. 16, to tryout.

You will be assigned a tryout time and lane.

An information meeting will be held at WMS in the Media center on Monday, Oct. 19 at 4 p.m. Attending this meeting is a requirement to tryout.

At this meeting you will receive: 2 teacher recommendation forms and a personal statement form. These are due by Friday, Oct. 23, at 4 p.m. These are to be turned into an envelope marked "WMS Swim Team" in the office. Please use only the provided forms for recommendations and personal statements.

You will be notified of your try-out time by Oct. 21.

Tryouts for the 2009-2010 Season will be on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 3:30-5 p.m. at the Levine Jewish Community Center (www.charlottejcc.org) The JCC is located on Providence Road, 3.5 miles north of Pineville-Matthews Road.

TO TRY OUT YOU MUST HAVE:
1. Join the Boosters Club and pay a nonrefundable fee of $25.
2. Bring a copy of the newest report card.
3. Sign the Boosters Club application that includes a liability waiver.
4. Turn in a copy of your insurance card, front AND back.
5. Email the coach at to sign-up to try-out by Fri., Oct. 16, even if you were on the team last year.
6. Turn in your 2 teacher recommendations AND personal statement by Oct. 23.

Please go to www.wmsabc.com/Documents.asp and click on the "Physical Form" as well as the "WMSABC Registration" form. You'll need a physical form to be on the team. You can tryout without it, but we'll take it if you have it.  Schedule your appointment now if you need a physical. Last minute appointments can be hard to schedule.

You'll have to swim 2 laps of each stroke and the coach will be looking for technique and ability, rather than speed. Flipturns and starts  from the blocks will also be evaluated.

If you are unsure of how to do something, YouTube has many good instructional videos on stroke technique as well as flip turns and starts.

Preseason conditioning will help you. If you do not have access to a pool, running and other dry-land conditioning is highly suggested.

Swim suits will be available through the Carolina Swim Shop (MAC). At the informational meeting you will be able to try on a suit. The Swim Shop will record you size and if you make the team you will then call and order your suit. The Speedo Electric Shock in green is our team suit.

For a picture of the suit:
http://www.amazon.com/Speedo-Womens-Electric-1-Piece-Swimsuit/dp/B00275G6MM

Prices last year were lower than what is offered on amazon.

If you need a practice suit it is highly suggested you purchase a Speedo Endurance suit. No, I do not get a kick-back from the company. They are polyester and are much more durable than Lycra swimsuits. I have had one for 6 months and it still looks brand new. The water at the JCC is very hard on suits.

There will be a limit to 30 swimmers this season due to practice space constraints. Swimming ability, grades, teacher recommendations and your personal statement will all contribute to you making the team.
