Welcome back to a new school year. I want to give you all an update regarding our plans for the 2021 swim season.
The Union County coaches will be meeting in the upcoming weeks to start finalizing details for this season. I appreciate everyone’s patience, but here is what I can share.
Team Size and Tryouts – Last year with Covid protocols, the Union County coaches decided to max the team sizes at 30 to reduce the amount of people in the building at one time during meets. We did not hit this limit (21 girls and 7 boys), so there was no need to make cuts. If the coaches decide it’s in the best interest to cap the team sizes and our registration exceeds that number, we will need to make cuts accordingly. Students registering for the swim team should have a basic understanding and ability to do all four strokes and turns to be able to complete practices and participate in meets.
Practices - We held practice twice/week last year, Tue/Thu 9pm-10pm at Charlotte Latin school (SwimMAC facility) starting in early November through mid-December. Swimmers were required to arrive and leave in their swim suits as locker room use was prohibited due to Covid protocols. I would expect something similar again this year.
Competitions – Meets will typically take place either Friday night or Saturday. Last season there were four meets with the last happening in mid-December. In previous seasons, the season lasted through mid-January. Last season we did not have spectators due to building capacity and distancing requirements. I do not know if that will be the case this season. We do need volunteers for every meet (timers, marshals), so please look to help out where possible.
USA Swimming competitive swimmers – For those students who swim competitively for a USA Swimming registered club team such as SwimMAC or MSA, you are not required to attend WMS practice. If you would like to attend WMS practice, you are always welcome.
Masks – Mask wearing requirements will follow the guidelines based on UCPS athletics and the facility requirements at the time.
Equipment – Swimmers should come prepared to practices and meets with at least 2 pairs of goggles, a team suit for competitions, and training suit for practices. I highly recommend getting goggles which are fully adjustable to avoid malfunctions when diving from the blocks.
I will add to this page as I have more information, but if you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to reach out to me at .
